How I will simplify Literacy Centers in My Kindergarten Classroom.

One thing I’m changing about next school year is I am simplifying Literacy Centers (guided reading centers). I am going to have the same five literacy centers all school year. And for most of them I will just be simply swapping out the cards each month. This will also help my students to have a consistent routine

1. Book Bins

Each student will have a book bin that they will pick out books at their level and they will also pick out dessert books that they can read. I also have them grab a whiteboard that they can write letters or site words or draw pictures of things that they see as they read.

2.  Write the Room

I love write the room I think it’s so important for them to get that movement break in during literacy centers especially in the younger grades. I will swap out the cards each month and the skills will keep getting harder and harder each month as we learn more five skills. For my write the room, I have the word hidden and they use a magnifying glass to try and find the CVC word, digraphs, CVCE Words and blends

3. IPad

I let them use certain apps during literacy centers they can use epic!, RAZ kids or teach your monster to read. I am very strict about iPads in my classroom because they are a tool and a privilege.

4. Writing Center

I will have a writing center. I will swap out the cards each month but each student will have a composite notebook that they will write in all year round. Some months it will be seasonal, I also love to do pirate theme and fairy tale theme. In December I love to include Holidays Around the World in my writing center.

5. Play Based Phonics Centers

The last center that I will be switching out each month it will be a play based phonics center and each month it will vary depending on the skills of my students. Some of my favorite player base skills are making giant CVC word friendship bracelets, Play-Doh and using toys to build a CVC words. The centers are differentiated and allow all students to be successful at them.
