List and label is one of my favorite writing units to teach. We always teach it as the beginning of kindergarten. It is amazing to watch the students grow as writers.  It is a great way for students to practice brave spelling words (inventive spelling). The best part of list and label is all students can see themselves as writers no matter what level of writer they are.

This can be done 2 ways, students dictate to the teacher and the teacher writes the students' responses. The students can also come up to the chart paper and help the teacher write their responses. This is a great way for the teacher to model good writing strategies.

This is a great strategy for teaching primary students how to write multiple sentences on the same topic. The teacher writes the first introductory sentence and models good writing strategies. The students can come up and help write the following sentences and/or use white boards and copy write the sentences as you write them on the chart paper. Then have the students work in pairs to write the concluding sentence. Students can also write the introductory sentence or any sentence in the paragraph.

Every month, we do a different themed writing center during guided reading. I provide vocabulary cards with pictures and sight words. You can also provide sentence starters to give all students the confidence to write sentences independently.

This center is differentiated for students of all levels. Students can pick a sticker, then be "brave spellers" to write the word. Or  write a sentence using the word. Students can also create a scene around the sticker and write a story about it.

The "how to writing unit" is such a fun unit to teach. When I teach my kindergarteners "how to writing", I try to make it tangible with activities that they can see the steps, such as how to make a pizza or plant a flower. I use graphic organizers with 4 boxes to help them to organize their writing along with visuals. I do a lot of modeling of writing out the steps and using transition words. 

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2

This strategy aligns with the CCSS that students will compose an informative text or opinion text using writing, drawing and dictating. 3 box writing allows students to write 3 separate ideas regarding the same topic. Students will write 3 sentences and illustrate each sentence. This is a great strategy for preparing kindergarten ELL students for the ACCESS test. On the kindergarten ACCESS test the students have to write 2-3 sentences on their own about a story. Your beginning and entering level students can practice drawing pictures and labeling. This is important because they will get more points on the ACCESS for attempting to write a word or two rather than just drawing or writing random letters.

We call it "brave spelling" when students sound out words. CVC words are great for beginning and entering ELLs to work on beginning, middle and ending sounds.

Provocation Centers is an ideology inspired by Reggio Emilia. I love these centers because it incorporates writing and play. The students are engaged and love labeling the vocabulary terms from our unit. Students are intrinsically motivated to brave spell and build vocabulary.
